About

Prof. Osmund D. Mwandemele is the Vice Chancellor at The International University of Management. He is also Professor of Plant Genetics and Breeding. He holds BSc (Hons) and MSc degrees from the University of Dar es Salaam, and PhD (1983) from the University of Sydney, Australia. Prof Mwandemele was Founding Director (2003-2006) of the Sam Nujoma Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre (a UNU-INRA Operating Unit whose Board he chairs) at Henties Bay, Namibia, and Founding Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Namibia (1995-2003). He has held academic and administrative positions at Egerton University in Njoro, Kenya, and the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Among his awards and recognitions, Prof. Mwandemele is a Fellow of the Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding; a Founding Member of the College of Research Associates of the United Nations University Institute of Natural Resources in Africa; an Honorary Professor at the Czech University of Agriculture Prague; and Scientific Advisor to the International Foundation for Science. He also chairs the Steering Committee of the Southern Africa Network of Biosciences (SANBio) (2005- todate) and is a member of the Ministerial Advisory Committee (2008-May 2013) on Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS), Ministry of Science and Technology, Republic of South Africa. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Women’s Action for Development; and Chairman of the Steering Committee of Biosciences, Finnish-South Africa (BIOFISA) Project coordinated by SANBio, based at CSIR, Pretoria, South Africa (2009-2012).

As Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Research at the University of Namibia, Prof. Mwandemele is the University Senate Vice-Chairperson, and also chairs a number of Council and Senate Committees which include the Academic Planning Committee, Staff Development Committee, Admissions and Examinations Committee, Staff Appointments Committee, Library and Information Technology Committee, Research and Publications Committee, the Board of the Sam Nujoma Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre, etc., Recently he was nominated to serve on the Council of the Eastern and Southern African Universities Research Programme (ESAURP); He is also serving as the Country Director for a Rice Project in Namibia, funded by the Japanese Government through JICA involving Namibian and Japanese Research Scientists. Prof Mwandemele is the author or co-author of numerous scholarly articles.

Street Name In 2010 the Town of Henties Bay gave a street name, “Osmund Mwandemele Avenue”, in honour of the excellent work emanating from contributions towards the establishment of a new University Research Centre, “the Sam Nujoma Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre” which also initiated several community projects which benefitted the local communities along the coast.
Member Advisory Council of the Eastern and Southern African Universities Research Programme (ESAURP), from January 2013 for three years.
Member Appointed by the Namibian State President, H.E. Dr. H. Pohamba to serve on a 9-member Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC) from 03 May 2013 for three years.
